ABSTRACT

Human T-lymphotropic virus-1 [HTLV-1] can cause adult T-cell leukemia/ lymphoma [ATL/L], which is a rare and aggressive type of blood cancer. Herein, we report a case of ATL/L in a middle-aged man with unusual jaw presentations. The patient presented with mandibular, maxillary and palatal bony hard expansion, accompanied by generalized tooth mobility six months prior to admission to the Department of Oral Medicine. The panoramic radiograph showed generalized rarefaction of jaw bones. After laboratory examinations and bone marrow aspiration, ATL/L was diagnosed in association with HTLV-1. The patient underwent chemotherapy. Although the majority of infections associated with HTLV-1 are asymptomatic, some patients may develop blood diseases such as ATL/L and neurological disorders, mainly HTLV-1 associated myelopathy and tropical spastic paraparesis. ATL/L is a rare hematological malignancy in oral cavity that should be included in the differential diagnosis of cases with jaw swelling or generalized demineralization. Serum levels of anti-HTLV-1 antibodies should be examined in suspicious patients, particularly in endemic regions

ABSTRACT

Evaluation of educational processes in different fields of medical sciences has high priority because of the important role in professional experts training. Dentistry, as an important field of medical sciences, requires scientific and professional skills. Surveying the opinions of dental students as the main actual consumers of the education is one of the most popular methods to evaluate the quality of dental clinical education. The aim of this study was to evaluate the students'perception about clinical education and examination in Mashhad dental school in 2009. All students at fourth, fifth and sixth grades of Mashhad dental school in 2009, were participated in this cross-sectional study. A questionnaire was designed in this study to assess clinical education. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire was proved. The results were presented in tables. Kruskal Wallis test was used to compare between groups [a=0.05]. The results showed that the students' perception, in most areas of education, performance of clinical faculty, clinical facilities, clinical assessment, evaluation of students' activities by professors, nurses cooperation and educational purposes was positive while there were some deficiencies particularly in course selection, and monitoring student's work in a few departments. There was no difference between clinical education and evaluation of departments in dental school in students' points of view. It can be concluded that revision of school activities and review of curriculum for possible changes, providing equipment and materials required in the clinical environment is suggested

Recurrent aphthous ulcers [RAS] are one of the most common painful diseases affecting the oral mucosa. The psychological-emotional factors should be considered as predisposing factors. However, the association between psychiatric disorders and RAS has not been fully investigated in Iranian population. Demographic data and medical history as well as the number and type of the recurrent ulcers were obtained. The records of SCL9O questionnaire and interviews were analyzed by psychiatrist. Data obtained by personality evaluation and also the frequency of psychopathologic disease according to age, sex and duration of ulcers were described in tables and charts. 65.7% of 35 subjects were female; the average age range was 21-30 years. 74.3% of patients had psychiatric disorders and the others were normal. The most common psychiatric disorder was concurrent minor depression and anxiety. Psychiatric disorders were most common among women. The current study revealed that majority of patients with aphthous ulcers have some kinds of psychiatric disorders especially anxiety, depression and obsession compulsion.
